Welcome to our site. We are two degreed engineers who have spent too much time working, and too little time traveling over the course of our (very long) careers. At some point (hopefully in the not-too-distant future), we will retire and set forth on the Road Trip of our lives. This is something that we have always dreamed of and we figure by putting our plans out there for all the world to see, you will hold us accountable and we will commit to following through. And we invite all of you along for the ride.
Inspired by the 2015 blog post of University of Michigan researcher Randy Olson (and motivated by the fact that our kids are grown), we are starting to plan a once-in-a-lifetime retirement road trip that we have dubbed “The Irrational and Irresponsible Ultimate Retirement Road Trip.” Based on our preliminary calculations, we expect this trip to take approximately 109 days, touch each of the 48 contiguous United States, and allow us to experience the sights and sounds of some of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring settings that our wonderful country offers.
The details are very much in the beginning stages and we fully expect that our itinerary (and our map) will change as we get closer to our retirement (countdown clock) – but you can never start planning too early, right? And we invite you along for the ride, both figuratively and literally. At some point we will start to post quantitative details of our journey (miles, dates, times, etc.). If you are in the area, let’s grab a beer. If you can’t meet us out on the road, we would welcome all recommendations of sights worth seeing and destinations worth visiting. We'd love to hear your travel stories!
This is the most beautiful country in the world. And we'd love to share this experience with every one of you.
